Definition
Where a reserved instance locks in a specific instance shape, a savings plan locks in a spend rate. You commit to, say, $10/hour of compute usage for one or three years, and the discount applies automatically to whatever instance types and sizes you run, up to that commitment. That flexibility usually comes at a slightly smaller discount than an equivalently-sized reserved instance.
Savings plans are the better fit for teams whose instance mix changes over time; reserved instances suit a stable, predictable footprint.
Where it shows up
A savings plan shows up on the bill as its own Savings Plans charge type, applied automatically to whatever instance family and size ran that hour, up to the committed spend rate. Usage above the commitment falls back to the on-demand rate on the same line.
What makes it expensive
This gets expensive fast: committing to a spend rate that no longer matches a shrinking footprint, leaving the plan under-covered by real usage. The utilization report shows the gap between what you committed to and what the plan actually covered. Read it on the same cadence you read reserved instance coverage, since the two failure modes look nothing alike.
